When you decide you want to have a family photo session, one of the first questions to think about is how to dress. The main goals of a family photo are to share the individuality of your family, evoke wonderful emotions, and to treasure memories of your children for years to come. Oddly enough, the outfit plays an important role in achieving these goals. Choosing the right clothing allows you to build a single image of your family and effectively create the desired visual emphasis.
What are the basic principles of clothing choice for a family photo session? Lets talk about!
Color Family’s outfits should be based on a harmonious combination of 3-4 colors.
Patterns The use of a relatively small reoccurring pattern in the fabric is welcomed. DO NOT wear colorful clothes or clothes displaying a large pattern or logo.
Layers of texture and fabric I encourage the use of layers and combinations of different types of texture, accessories, and accents.
Footwear Pay attention to your shoes! They can be a neutral article of clothing or an important accent color as well as be clean and polished.
Props More stylistic or color accents can be created by use of props from your everyday life (ex: Toys, musical instruments etc.)
Uniformity Clothing for all family members should sustain the same style- modern, romantic, hippie etc. However, it is important to find a balance between the overall style and the personality of each family member.
Formality Clothing should be moderately festive but rather informal. Evening dresses do not mix well with young children and do not fully represent your family in their natural state. Choose age-appropriate clothing for children.
Comfort It is important to choose clothes you feel attractive in. Clothes should be comfortable; this does not prevent them from being fashionable as well! Similarly, clothes should be clean and wrinkle-free. Children’s clothes should not be oversized.
The shoot place Clothing should correspond with the place of the shoot (indoor/outdoor), the time of year, and the weather (if outdoors).
